Save us, please!

Hi! We're a team of animal friends. Some of us are in trouble, and we need kids like you to help. Come meet us and find out what you can do.

Meet the animal friends

Each friend has a problem, and each problem has things you can do about it, right at home or at school.

Bamboo the Panda Cub

"My forest home keeps shrinking!"

Pandas eat bamboo for up to 14 hours a day!

Pandas live in misty mountain forests in China. When people cut down too many trees, pandas lose their food and their homes. The good news: people protected lots of forest, and wild pandas are slowly coming back.

  • Use both sides of your paper before you grab a new sheet. Paper comes from trees.
  • Pick recycled paper and notebooks when you can.
  • Learn about panda reserves and tell a friend why forests matter.

Queenie the Bee

"I need more flowers, please!"

About 1 out of every 3 bites of food you eat needs pollinators like bees.

Bees fly from flower to flower drinking nectar and carrying pollen. That helps plants grow fruit, veggies and nuts. But bees are having a hard time because there aren't enough flowers, and some bug sprays make them sick.

  • Plant flowers in a pot, a window box or a garden. Bees love purple and blue ones!
  • Put out a shallow dish of water with pebbles so bees can land and drink.
  • Ask a grown-up to skip bug spray on flowers. And stay calm near bees; they don't want to sting you.

Swirl the Butterfly

"My babies need the right plants!"

Monarch caterpillars can only eat one kind of plant: milkweed.

Baby butterflies are caterpillars, and many of them are picky eaters. When wild plants get mowed down or paved over, caterpillars have nothing to eat, and there are fewer butterflies each year.

  • Plant flowers that grow naturally where you live. A garden shop can help you choose.
  • Leave a small wild, messy corner in the yard. Caterpillars and butterflies hide there.
  • Watch caterpillars where they live instead of taking them home.
